📰 Intel Update: When a Rollover Goes Wrong
A participant requested a tax-free 401(k)-to-traditional-IRA rollover, but the assets landed in a Roth IRA. The IRS treated it as a taxable conversion and denied relief after the mistake was discovered on Form 5498.
🎃 Execution: Five Scary Money Moves
1. The rollover that would not die
- Prefer a direct rollover. A check mailed to you can still qualify if it is payable to the receiving custodian for your benefit.
- An indirect rollover generally creates 20% withholding and a 60-day deadline. Missing either requirement can produce taxes and penalties.
- For TSP rollovers, establish each receiving traditional and Roth IRA in advance. Track CZTE contributions carefully.
2. No emergency fund
- PCS moves, deployments, delayed reimbursements, medical separation, repairs, and family changes can all produce sudden cash needs.
- Keep accessible money in a high-yield savings account.
- Credit cards, brokerage margin, and invested assets are not substitutes for emergency liquidity.
3. No life insurance at separation
- SGLI generally ends 120 days after separation, when family obligations may still be substantial.
- Reassess coverage when buying a home or having children, and again before separation and final medical evaluations.
- VGLI can bridge a gap, but premiums rise with age.
4. Co-signing a loan
- A co-signer is fully responsible for the balance, late fees, and credit damage if the borrower stops paying.
- Financial problems may also create security-clearance concerns for servicemembers.
- If helping a child, establish expectations and require early notice of payment trouble.
5. High-interest debt and buy now, pay later
- BNPL can quietly turn discretionary purchases into mandatory monthly payments.
- Multiple plans across different providers are difficult to track.
- SCRA and MLA protections do not make high-cost debt safe.
